Fine Gael TD and Minister with Responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe, has welcomed an increased Christmas bonus payment due to begin issuing to pensioners and other social welfare recipients in the County from Monday 28th November. Speaking this week Minister Kehoe said
“A key aim of this year’s budget was to ensure that young and old, employed and retired benefit from the country’s improving finances, the Christmas bonus is one element to ensure that this happens.
“Some 1.2 million people, including over 18,000 pensioners in County Wexford, will this week begin to benefit from the Christmas bonus, which this year is being paid at an increased rate of 85%. The payment recognises the needs of people dependent on social welfare payments for all or most of their income. It will provide an important additional support to families and individuals in meeting the costs associated with Christmas.
Minister Kehoe added
“This year’s payment which amounts to €221 million, an increase of €25 million on last year, will also provide a welcome boost to the local economy, particularly the retail sector.”
